Car insurance explained for teens and young adults.

Why I started this site

My teen daughter is studying for a driver's permit, and that whole friend group keeps picking my brain about car insurance. They ask me random questions because they don't know anything about it yet.

I told them that if they keep a B average or higher, a lot of insurance companies offer a student discount, and it helps their parents out. They were shocked. They had no idea.

Driver's ed has plenty of time for road signs and right of way, but insurance barely comes up. So most people find out later. They get a quote after they've already bought the car, or their parents see the new bill and start yelling.

I grew up with that. I'm a first generation immigrant, and my father didn't understand how premiums work. When three of his kids started driving as teens, his rates went up and it was a sticker shock for him. It was a lesson for all of us, and it took decades to sink in. I didn't really understand it myself until I got my own license.

Who writes this

I hold insurance producer licenses in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, 51 in total. I also have close to 20 years of experience in content strategy and search engine optimization, which is how this site works. Every article starts with something people are searching for, so the posts answer questions drivers are already asking.

Who this is for

Most car insurance websites are written for one of three audiences: parents, insurance companies, or lead generation sites that exist to send you to a quote form. This one is written for everyone else:

  • Teens getting ready for a permit or a first license
  • College students and first car buyers
  • People in their 20s and 30s who never had this explained
  • Anyone who finds insurance confusing and boring (it is boring, and it still matters)

If you're a parent, I hope it helps you too. You'll just notice that I'm explaining it to the person who is about to drive.

How I write

  • Plain language

If a term needs defining, I define it.

  • State rules are labeled

Insurance varies by state and by company, so I give examples and tell you what to ask.

  • Sources for facts

I check regulators, statutes and official guides before I publish, and I update posts when rules change.

  • No sales pressure

This site doesn't sell insurance, and there are no affiliate links.

A note on what this site is

The articles here are general information, not legal or financial advice, and they can't account for your policy, your state or your situation. For your own coverage, read your policy and ask your insurer or a licensed agent in your state.
